Mazda CX-9 maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps
A midsize three-row SUV with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs CX-9 owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.
Service schedule
What it needs, and what that runs

Known repair windows
What CX-9 owners actually run into
Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.
Cracked cylinder head / coolant leak (2.5T, pre-June-2020)
high severity40,000-110,000 mi · $2,500-$4,500
Mazda TSB on early Skyactiv-G 2.5 turbo; overheating/misfire; later builds revised
Water pump (chain-driven, internal)
medium severity80,000-130,000 mi · $500-$950
Coolant leak; higher labor than external pump
GDI intake-valve carbon buildup
medium severity60,000-100,000 mi · $400-$700
Direct-injection 2.5 Turbo
Turbo failure
medium severity90,000-150,000 mi · $1,800-$2,800
Boost/actuator or bearing failure; oil discipline critical
AC condenser damage
medium severity40,000-100,000 mi · $600-$1,050
Exposed condenser
Front brake / suspension wear (heavy 3-row)
low severity40,000-90,000 mi · $300-$700 per axle
Weight accelerates pad/rotor and bushing wear
Operator notes
Discontinued after 2023 (replaced by CX-90). Final generation (2016-2023) used the 2.5L Skyactiv-G Turbo with a timing CHAIN and 6-speed auto. Post-June-2020 builds have the revised head that fixes the early cracking TSB. Normal = 7,500 mi/12 mo synthetic; severe (frequent 3-row loads/towing) ~5,000 mi and earlier transmission fluid. FL-22 coolant ~10 yr/120k.
When the smart money sells
On fleet math, a gas CX-9 retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: Cracked cylinder head / coolant leak (2.5T, pre-June-2020) risk window ($2,500-$4,500) opens ~40,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
