Cost to keep

What it costs to own, by how long you keep it

Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new Passat at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.

Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.

Operator notes

US-built B7/NMS Passat (2012-2022); 2020-2022 uses the 2.0T EA888 (174 hp) with a conventional 6-speed Aisin torque-converter automatic (no DSG on final years), simplifying transmission service. Earlier years had 1.8T, VR6 and 2.0 TDI. Timing CHAIN. Full synthetic VW 508 00, 10k/1yr. 2022 was the final US model year (Limited Edition).

When the smart money sells

Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas Passat retires around 95,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
