Volkswagen Routan maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

Cost to keep

What it costs to own, by how long you keep it

Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new Routan at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.

You keep itOdometerServicingPer month
1 year12,000 mi$240$20
3 years36,000 mi$1,120$31
5 years60,000 mi$2,625$44
7 years84,000 mi$3,105$37
10 years120,000 mi$5,800$48
15 years180,000 mi$8,425$47

Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.

Beyond the schedule, the first big-ticket item this Routan is known for is 62TE 6-speed automatic solenoid/failure ($2,500-$4,500). It is a range, not a certainty - but it is the number to have in your head at the dealership.

Operator notes

Rebadged Dodge Grand Caravan (RT platform); 2013 is the final retail model year (a limited 2014 fleet run existed). 2011-2013 = 3.6L Pentastar V6 (timing chain) with the 62TE 6-speed; 2009-2010 = 4.0L SOHC V6. Follows Chrysler service basis (oil-life system, ~6k-10k). Parts/service via Mopar/Dodge network rather than VW.

When the smart money sells

Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas Routan retires around 95,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
