Ram 1500 Classic maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps
A full-size pickup (previous-gen DS body) with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs 1500 Classic owners actually report, and the mileage windows worth buying ahead of - whether you are keeping it for yourself or putting it to work.
Service schedule
What it needs, and what that runs

Known repair windows
What 1500 Classic owners actually run into
Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.
5.7L HEMI MDS lifter / camshaft failure
high severity60,000-150,000 mi · $2,500-$5,500
Same MDS lifter roller-seize/cam-scoring failure as current 1500; ticking, misfire, metal in oil.
TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) failure
medium severity60,000-150,000 mi · $500-$1,200
Older DS-platform electrical hub causes random no-start, fuel-pump-relay and accessory gremlins.
Exhaust manifold bolt breakage (HEMI)
medium severity80,000-160,000 mi · $400-$1,200
Broken fasteners produce cold-start tick and exhaust leak.
Pentastar water pump
medium severity90,000-140,000 mi · $400-$800
Chain-driven pump weeps coolant.
eTorque 48V system (3.6 eTorque trims)
medium severity60,000-120,000 mi · $900-$2,000
Belt-starter-generator/48V pack faults on eTorque-equipped Classics.
Cost to keep
What it costs to own, by how long you keep it
Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new 1500 Classic at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.
| You keep it | Odometer | Servicing | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 12,000 mi | $130 | $11 |
| 3 years | 36,000 mi | $690 | $19 |
| 5 years | 60,000 mi | $1,895 | $32 |
| 7 years | 84,000 mi | $2,155 | $26 |
| 10 years | 120,000 mi | $4,465 | $37 |
| 15 years | 180,000 mi | $6,360 | $35 |
Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.
Beyond the schedule, the first big-ticket item this 1500 Classic is known for is 5.7L HEMI MDS lifter / camshaft failure from about 60,000 miles ($2,500-$5,500). It is a range, not a certainty - but it is the number to have in your head at the dealership.
Operator notes
Discontinued after the 2024 model year - the 'Classic' was the carryover fourth-gen DS body sold alongside the newer DT 1500. Timing chain (no belt). Engines: 3.6L Pentastar V6 (some eTorque) and 5.7L HEMI V8, 8-speed 845RE auto. Oil 0W-20 full synthetic, ~10k normal / 5k severe. Same HEMI durability concerns as the current truck but on an older, more electrically troublesome platform.
When the smart money sells
Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas 1500 Classic retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: 5.7L HEMI MDS lifter / camshaft failure risk window ($2,500-$5,500) opens ~60,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
