Ram 2500 maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A heavy-duty full-size pickup with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs 2500 owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Service schedule

What it needs, and what that runs

IntervalServiceTypical cost
10,000 miFull-synthetic oil & filter (~7 qt), tire rotation, multipoint inspection$100-$190
12,000 miCK-4 15W-40/10W-30 oil & filter (~12 qt), tire rotation, DEF top-off$150-$290
15,000 miDual fuel filters (chassis + engine), water-separator drain$150-$320
30,000 miEngine + cabin air filters, brake fluid flush$150-$340
60,000 miTransmission fluid (68RFE / Aisin AS69RC diesel or 8-speed gas), transfer-case & front/rear differential fluids$400-$820
100,000 miSpark plugs (16 on 6.4 HEMI), engine coolant$350-$650

Known repair windows

What 2500 owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Bosch CP4.2 injection pump failure (6.7 Cummins, 2019+)

high severity

100,000+ mi · $8,000-$12,000

Metal-on-metal CP4 self-destructs and sends debris through the entire fuel system; catastrophic full-system replacement.

Intake grid-heater bolt failure (6.7 Cummins)

high severity

60,000-150,000 mi · $1,500-$4,000

Grid-heater fastener can loosen and drop toward cylinder #6; catastrophic if ingested. Known 2019-2023 issue.

EGR cooler / valve clogging (diesel)

medium severity

80,000-150,000 mi · $1,200-$2,500

Carbon-clogged or cracked EGR cooler; coolant loss, codes, limp mode - worse with idle/short-trip use.

DPF clogging / failed regens (diesel)

medium severity

80,000-160,000 mi · $2,000-$4,500

Soot-loaded DPF from idling/short trips; frequent forced regens, high EGT, reduced-power messages.

VGT variable-geometry turbo sticking (diesel)

medium severity

Any mileage · $2,000-$3,500

Soot binds the vanes; low boost, whine, slow spool.

6.4L HEMI exhaust manifold bolts / MDS lifter (gas)

medium severity

80,000-160,000 mi · $500-$2,500

Same HEMI manifold-bolt tick and MDS lifter/cam concerns as light-duty HEMIs.

Death wobble (solid front axle)

medium severity

Any mileage · $300-$900

Worn track bar / steering damper triggers violent front-end shimmy over bumps; well-documented HD trait.

Operator notes

Powertrain listed as gas because the standard engine is the 6.4L HEMI V8; the signature option is the 6.7L Cummins turbo-diesel I6 (up to 430 hp / 1,075 lb-ft on HO) - full diesel maintenance (fuel filters, DEF, DPF regen, EGR, glow plugs) and diesel failures are covered above. All engines timing-chain/gear-driven (no belt). Diesel oil 15W-40 (or 10W-30 CK-4) ~12 qt; gas 0W-40 full synthetic. Severe schedule applies for towing/plowing/idling - very common in this class.

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a gas 2500 retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: Intake grid-heater bolt failure (6.7 Cummins) risk window ($1,500-$4,000) opens ~60,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
