Jeep Wrangler maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A 2-door off-road SUV with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs Wrangler owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Service schedule

What it needs, and what that runs

IntervalServiceTypical cost

30,000 miEngine air filter; cabin air filter; spark plugs (3.6 Pentastar); inspect ball joints, track bar, CV/axle boots$350-$600
60,000 miFront + rear axle (differential) fluid; transfer-case fluid; automatic transmission fluid (severe/off-road/water); brake fluid flush$600-$1,100
100,000 miEngine coolant (OAT); transmission fluid; spark plugs (2.0T); accessory belt inspect$400-$800

Known repair windows

What Wrangler owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Death wobble (track bar / steering damper / tie rod / ball joints)

high severity

40,000-100,000 mi · $200-$1,500

Violent front-end oscillation at 45-55 mph after a bump; single-part fix cheap, full front-end $2,000-$3,500. Solid-axle safety concern.

Oil filter housing / oil cooler coolant+oil leak

medium severity

50,000-100,000 mi · $600-$1,200

The #1 3.6L Pentastar failure; plastic housing gasket hardens and leaks oil/coolant down the block.

Pentastar cylinder-head crack / ticking (cyl 2 or 5)

medium severity

60,000-120,000 mi · $900-$2,500

Ticking + exhaust smell; less common on post-2014 heads but still reported.

2.0L turbo oil cooler / turbocharger (if equipped)

medium severity

60,000-110,000 mi · $800-$2,500

Turbo-four seals/oil-feed and cooler issues; mild-hybrid eTorque adds complexity.

Soft-top / freedom-top & window seal leaks, wind noise

low severity

Any mileage · $100-$600

Water intrusion and rattles inherent to removable-top design.

Operator notes

Timing CHAIN (no belt). Current JL platform. Standard 3.6L Pentastar V6; optional 2.0L turbo-four w/ eTorque. Oil interval signaled by oil-life monitor, max 10,000 mi / 12 mo; off-road/dusty/water use is 'severe service' and shortens axle, transfer-case and trans-fluid intervals sharply (drain diffs after deep-water fording). Pentastar spark plugs ~30k on Wrangler schedule.

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a gas Wrangler retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: Death wobble (track bar / steering damper / tie rod / ball joints) risk window ($200-$1,500) opens ~40,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
