Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps
A 4-door off-road SUV with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs Wrangler JK Unlimited owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Known repair windows
What Wrangler JK Unlimited owners actually run into
Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.
Death wobble (steering/suspension)
high severity40,000-100,000 mi · $200-$1,500
Same solid-front-axle wobble as 2-door JK; longer 4-door wheelbase does not eliminate it.
TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) failure
high severity60,000-120,000 mi · $800-$1,500
No-start / fuel-pump-relay failure and random electrical faults.
Oil filter housing / oil cooler leak (3.6 Pentastar)
medium severity50,000-100,000 mi · $400-$900
Cracked plastic housing gasket; oil/coolant seepage.
Pentastar cylinder-head crack / ticking (cyl 2/5)
medium severity60,000-120,000 mi · $900-$2,500
Left-bank ticking + exhaust smell; risk skewed to earlier heads.
Window regulators & frame/rocker rust
medium severity40,000-120,000 mi · $150-$1,500
Four doors = more regulators to fail; corrosion in salt regions.
Operator notes
Timing CHAIN. Final JK-generation 4-door was 2018. Mechanically identical to 2-door JK (3.6L Pentastar V6, solid axles) on a longer wheelbase with a factory bump for gear/differential fluid on heavier tow/off-road use. Now an aging vehicle: prioritize steering/suspension, TIPM, oil-housing and rust inspections. 3,000-5,000 mi oil advisable for hard use.
When the smart money sells
On fleet math, a gas Wrangler JK Unlimited retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: Death wobble (steering/suspension) risk window ($200-$1,500) opens ~40,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
