Jeep Wrangler Unlimited maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps
A 4-door off-road SUV with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs Wrangler Unlimited owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Known repair windows
What Wrangler Unlimited owners actually run into
Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.
Death wobble (track bar / steering damper / tie rod / ball joints)
high severity40,000-100,000 mi · $200-$1,500
Violent front-end oscillation at 45-55 mph; solid-axle safety issue, full front-end refresh up to $2,000-$3,500.
Oil filter housing / oil cooler coolant+oil leak
medium severity50,000-100,000 mi · $600-$1,200
The signature 3.6L Pentastar leak; plastic housing gasket fails.
Pentastar cylinder-head crack / ticking (cyl 2/5)
medium severity60,000-120,000 mi · $900-$2,500
Ticking + exhaust smell; less frequent on current heads but still reported.
2.0L turbo oil cooler / turbocharger (if equipped)
medium severity60,000-110,000 mi · $800-$2,500
Turbo-four seal/oil issues; eTorque mild-hybrid adds complexity.
Soft-top / freedom-top & window seal leaks, wind noise
low severityAny mileage · $100-$600
Water intrusion and rattles from removable-top design; four doors add seals.
Operator notes
Timing CHAIN. This is the current JL 4-door (the 'Unlimited' badge). Standard 3.6L Pentastar V6; optional 2.0L turbo w/ eTorque (a 3.0L EcoDiesel and 392 Hemi V8 were offered in some years). Oil interval up to 10,000 mi / 12 mo via oil-life monitor; off-road/dusty/deep-water use is severe service - drain axle and transfer-case fluid after water fording. Shares all core Wrangler failure modes.
When the smart money sells
On fleet math, a gas Wrangler Unlimited retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: Death wobble (track bar / steering damper / tie rod / ball joints) risk window ($200-$1,500) opens ~40,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
