Chrysler 300 maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps
A full-size sedan with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs 300 owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.
Service schedule
What it needs, and what that runs
| Interval | Service | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| 8,000 mi / 12 mo | Full-synthetic oil + filter (V6 0W-20; 5.7L HEMI 5W-20; 6.4L uses 0W-40/5W-40); tire rotation; inspection. V8 holds ~7 qt | $70-$140 |
| 20,000 mi | Cabin air filter; engine air filter (severe); inspect brakes, suspension, tie rods; rotate tires | $70-$150 |
| 30,000 mi | Engine + cabin air filters; inspect brake pads, ball joints, exhaust; road test | $90-$190 |
| 60,000 mi | Brake fluid flush; replace air filters; inspect rear diff/driveshaft (RWD/AWD), coolant condition, belts | $180-$350 |
| 100,000 mi | Spark plugs (V6 iridium ~6 plugs; 5.7L/6.4L HEMI have 16 plugs); inspect PCV, water pump; coolant change by 150k | V6 $220-$420; HEMI (16 plugs) $280-$550 |
| 60,000 mi | Transmission fluid + filter service; rear differential + transfer-case fluid on AWD | $350-$650 |
Known repair windows
What 300 owners actually run into
Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.
5.7L HEMI MDS lifter / camshaft failure ('HEMI tick')
high severity80,000-150,000 mi · $2,000-$5,000
Collapsed MDS roller lifter can wipe the cam; ticking + misfire; V6 cars are exempt from this one
TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) electrical faults
medium severity60,000-120,000 mi · $600-$1,200
Classic Chrysler no-start, dead fuel pump, phantom electrical gremlins; module replacement or repair
Pentastar 3.6L oil filter housing / cooler leak
medium severity60,000-120,000 mi · $400-$700
Plastic housing cracks; oil/coolant leak — same defect across all Pentastar Chryslers
Water pump (V6 internal chain-driven; V8 external)
medium severity80,000-120,000 mi · $500-$900
V6 pump behind timing cover is labor-intensive; V8 pump is simpler/cheaper
AC condenser / compressor
medium severity70,000-120,000 mi · $500-$900
Front-mounted condenser vulnerable to road debris; common on aging LX-platform cars
Front suspension — control-arm bushings, sway-bar links
low severity80,000-130,000 mi · $300-$800
Heavy RWD chassis wears bushings and links; clunks over bumps
Operator notes
Final year 2023 (LX platform); limited 2023 300C carried the 485-hp 6.4L HEMI as the send-off. Timing CHAIN on V6 and both HEMIs — no belt. 8-speed ZF is 'fill-for-life' but a fluid/filter service every ~60-80k is strongly advised. HEMI and 6.4L want premium fuel; 6.4L uses a heavier synthetic. Coolant Mopar OAT 10-yr/150k.
When the smart money sells
On fleet math, a gas 300 retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: 5.7L HEMI MDS lifter / camshaft failure ('HEMI tick') risk window ($2,000-$5,000) opens ~80,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
