Porsche Cayman maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A mid-engine sports coupe with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs Cayman owners actually report, and the mileage windows worth buying ahead of - whether you are keeping it for yourself or putting it to work.

Service schedule

What it needs, and what that runs

Known repair windows

What Cayman owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Water pump failure

medium severity

40,000-80,000 mi · $800-$1,600

Preventive item ~40k / 4 yr; plastic impeller/bearing

Plastic coolant pipe/hose seal leaks

low severity

Any mileage · $500-$1,200

Rubber seals between plastic coolant pipe and block degrade

PDK mechatronics / clutch

medium severity

Any mileage · $3,000-$6,000

PDK cars; service fluid on schedule

Cylinder bore scoring (some 9A1 DFI engines)

medium severity

Any mileage · $8,000-$15,000

Much rarer than 987/996 era; borescope high-mile cars

AOS / rear main seal seepage; stuck spark plugs

low severity

Any mileage · $600-$2,000

Change plugs before 30k to avoid seizing in the head over 10 yr

Cost to keep

What it costs to own, by how long you keep it

Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new Cayman at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.

You keep itOdometerServicingPer month
1 year12,000 mi$375$31
3 years36,000 mi$1,450$40
5 years60,000 mi$3,775$63
7 years84,000 mi$5,350$64
10 years120,000 mi$7,550$63
15 years180,000 mi$11,325$63

Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.

Beyond the schedule, the first big-ticket item this Cayman is known for is PDK mechatronics / clutch ($3,000-$6,000). It is a range, not a certainty - but it is the number to have in your head at the dealership.

Operator notes

Pre-718 981-generation Cayman; final NA-flat-6 Cayman (2.7/3.4/GT4 3.8) before the turbo-4 718. 981 eliminated IMS/RMS/oil-starvation issues of older cars. Chain-driven, DFI. 10k/1yr synthetic factory; owners often shorten to 5k. Discontinued 2016 (rebranded 718 for 2017).

When the smart money sells

Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas Cayman retires around 95,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
