Porsche Boxster maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A mid-engine sports convertible (roadster) with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs Boxster owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Known repair windows

What Boxster owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Water pump failure

medium severity

40,000-80,000 mi · $800-$1,600

Plastic impeller/bearing wear; preventive at ~40k / 4 yr

Plastic coolant pipe/hose seal leaks

low severity

Any mileage · $500-$1,200

Rubber seals between plastic pipe and block degrade, weep coolant

PDK mechatronics / clutch

medium severity

Any mileage · $3,000-$6,000

PDK cars; keep fluid serviced

Cylinder bore scoring (some 9A1 DFI engines)

medium severity

Any mileage · $8,000-$15,000

Far rarer than on older 987/996; still worth a borescope on high-mile cars

Convertible top motor/hydraulics & AOS/RMS seepage

low severity

Any mileage · $700-$2,000

Roadster top mechanism plus oil-separator/seal seepage

Operator notes

Pre-718 981-generation Boxster; final NA-flat-6 Boxster (2.7/3.4) before the turbo-4 718. 981 eliminated the IMS bearing and most 987-era faults. Chain-driven; DFI (watch oil-dilution/plug fouling). 10k/1yr synthetic factory interval; many owners shorten to 5k. Discontinued 2016 (rebranded 718 for 2017).

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a gas Boxster retires around 95,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
