Polestar 2 maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A compact fastback sedan (5-door liftback) with a battery-electric powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs 2 owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Service schedule

What it needs, and what that runs

IntervalServiceTypical cost
20,000 mi / 24 moCabin air filter, wiper blades, tire rotation, brake/suspension & underbody inspection, software/OTA update, high-voltage system diagnostic (NO oil change - EV)$200-$350 (1st service often free)
40,000 mi / 48 moAbove items plus brake fluid flush$350-$550
60,000 mi / 72 moCabin filter, wipers, tire rotation, brake fluid, inspection, reduction-gear/drive-unit oil check$250-$450
90,000 mi / 120 moBattery/inverter (thermal loop) coolant replacement, brake fluid, full inspection$300-$550

Known repair windows

What 2 owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

12V (AGM) battery failure - 'car won't wake up'

medium severity

20,000-60,000 mi · $250-$450

Most common complaint: dead 12V triggers no-start, won't shift, hatch won't open, energy-saving shutdown warnings. Weak link in the electrical system.

Infotainment / center display (MCU) freezes & resets

medium severity

Any mileage · $0-$1,500

Touchscreen freezes, audio drop-outs, system reboots; usually software/OTA fix under warranty, occasionally a display module.

Rear-view camera fault (recall)

low severity

Any mileage · $0 (recall) - $600

Repeated NHTSA recalls/queries for camera image failing to display; camera-communication software updates, sometimes camera hardware.

HV battery contactor / BECM software power-loss (early cars)

medium severity

Any mileage · $0 (software recall)

Battery energy control module contactor issue caused unexpected power loss; remedied by dealer software update. Broader HV battery degradation is slow (8-yr/100k warranty).

Suspension bushings / wheel bearings / control arms

medium severity

50,000-90,000 mi · $400-$1,200

Heavy EV curb weight on performance tires wears front control-arm bushings and wheel bearings; sport suspension is firm.

Onboard charger / charge-port faults

medium severity

Any mileage · $1,000-$3,000 (often warranty)

Occasional AC onboard-charger or charge-port communication failures; typically covered early but big-ticket out of warranty.

Operator notes

Pure EV - NO oil changes. Scheduled service is every 20,000 mi / 2 yr: cabin filter, wipers, tire rotation, brake fluid (~every 2 yr), and long-life battery/inverter coolant (very long interval). Regen braking greatly extends pad/rotor life. HV battery warranty 8 yr/100k mi. Current gen still sold for 2026 (Qualcomm processor upgrade); all-new next-gen Polestar 2 due early 2027. Performance tires wear fast (20k-30k mi); budget $900-$1,400/set.

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a battery-electric 2 retires around 150,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
