Jaguar XK maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A grand tourer (coupe / convertible) with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs XK owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Service schedule

What it needs, and what that runs

IntervalServiceTypical cost
10,000 mi / 12 moFull-synthetic oil + filter; tire rotation; multi-point inspection; service reset; fluid top-off$200-$350
30,000 mi / 24 moOil + filter; engine air filter; cabin filter; brake fluid flush; tire rotation; inspection$450-$700
60,000 miSpark plugs (8); oil service; air + cabin filters; brake service; supercharger + driveline check (XKR)$550-$850
100,000 miEngine coolant change; ZF 6HP transmission service; water-pump/coolant-pipe preventive replacement; rear diff fluid$800-$1,400

Known repair windows

What XK owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

5.0L V8 (AJ133) timing chain tensioner / guide

high severity

80,000-120,000 mi · $4,000-$8,000

Pre-2013 tensioner design flaw; adjusters wear/fail around ~80k and can destroy the engine. Steel piston chews the aluminum guide button - budget replacement on early cars.

Mechanical water pump failure

high severity

20,000-90,000 mi · $900-$1,600

Coolant corrodes the bearing/seal; some fail under 20k mi. Low-coolant warning + leak at pulley - recognized 5.0 weak point.

Plastic coolant pipes (front upper/lower + rear manifold)

medium severity

60,000-120,000 mi · $1,200-$2,500

Brittle plastic coolant tubes on the 5.0 crack and leak; often done together with the water pump.

Ignition coils / cam-cover gasket oil in plug wells

medium severity

60,000-120,000 mi · $600-$1,200

Coil-on-plug units fail with heat/age; leaking cam-cover gasket pools oil in the wells causing misfires.

Supercharger coupler / snout (XKR)

medium severity

60,000-100,000 mi · $400-$900

Coupler rattle on supercharged XKR/XKR-S; fix with Eaton solid coupler before snout damage.

Operator notes

Timing CHAIN, no belt - but the 5.0 pre-2013 tensioner flaw is the defining XK risk (fixed on 2012-13+ engines). Final 2010-2014 cars use the 5.0L V8 (naturally aspirated or supercharged XKR/XKR-S); 2007-2009 used the 4.2L AJ-V8 (valley-pipe + duckbill drain / wet-footwell quirks). ZF 6HP auto. Usually low annual mileage as a GT, so age-related cooling/rubber items dominate. Production ended 2014.

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a gas XK retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: Mechanical water pump failure risk window ($900-$1,600) opens ~20,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
