Ford Mustang maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A sports coupe with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs Mustang owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Known repair windows

What Mustang owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

GDI intake-valve carbon buildup (2.3 EcoBoost)

medium severity

60,000-100,000 mi · $400-$700

Walnut-blast decarbon; rough idle/misfire from direct-injection deposits

Turbocharger wear / wastegate

medium severity

80,000-130,000 mi · $1,500-$2,800

Boost leaks, rattling actuator

Coolant intrusion / RTV sealing (2.3 EcoBoost)

medium severity

60,000-120,000 mi · $1,000-$3,000

Family of 2.3 engines has documented coolant-in-cylinder cases

10R80 transmission harsh-shift / solenoid

medium severity

60,000-120,000 mi · $400-$3,500

Fluid service helps; valve body/solenoid on worse cases

Operator notes

In production (S650, 7th gen). Base engine 2.3L turbo EcoBoost I4 (~315 hp); GT gets 5.0L V8. Full synthetic; Ford IOLM ~10k normal, 5k track/severe. Timing chain (no belt). 10R80 10-speed auto or 6-speed manual. Reset IOLM after each change.

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a gas Mustang retires around 95,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
