Chevrolet Malibu maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A midsize sedan with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs Malibu owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

What it needs, and what that runs

Known repair windows

What Malibu owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

1.5L turbo (LFV) turbocharger failure

high severity

60,000-120,000 mi · $1,200-$2,200

Oil pooling/leaks at turbo, reduced-power/CEL. GM special coverage N252508360 covered some units for 15 yr/150k.

Engine oil consumption / overheating

high severity

70,000-130,000 mi · $300-$2,500

1.5T known for oil burn and coolant-related overheating; ranges from top-offs to engine damage.

CVT (Jatco VT40) transmission failure

high severity

90,000-140,000 mi · $3,500-$5,500

2016+ CVT-equipped cars; whine/shudder/slip. Fluid service and cooling are critical.

Coolant leaks (thermostat housing / water pump)

medium severity

60,000-110,000 mi · $400-$800

Contributes to the overheating pattern on the 1.5T.

AC condenser / electrical (Stabilitrak, sensors)

medium severity

70,000-120,000 mi · $400-$1,100

Condenser stone damage; occasional Stabilitrak/sensor faults.

Operator notes

9th-gen Malibu; final year 2025 (last unit built Nov 15, 2024). 1.5L turbo LFV on GM oil-life monitor with dexos1 full synthetic. Timing chain (no belt), but turbo spark plugs run a shorter ~45k interval. Late trims use the Jatco CVT (not a conventional automatic) — treat CVT fluid service and turbo/oil-consumption as the key risks. (Prior 2016-2018 also offered a 2.0T with an 8-/9-speed auto and a Malibu Hybrid.)

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a gas Malibu retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: 1.5L turbo (LFV) turbocharger failure risk window ($1,200-$2,200) opens ~60,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
