Cadillac ELR maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A plug-in hybrid luxury coupe with a phev powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs ELR owners actually report, and the mileage windows worth buying ahead of - whether you are keeping it for yourself or putting it to work.

Service schedule

What it needs, and what that runs

IntervalServiceCost
24 moFull synthetic dexos1 oil + filter on 1.4L range-extender (engine runs seldom, so time-capped at 2 yr); tire rotation$70-$140
22,500 miCabin air filter; engine air filter; inspect HV cooling loops & tires$80-$200
150,000 mi / 60 moDrain/refill battery, power-electronics and engine coolant loops (3 separate loops); brake fluid flush; run engine-maintenance/fuel-maintenance mode$250-$600

Known repair windows

What ELR owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

HV traction battery (16-17 kWh Voltec, Gen-1 Volt cells) degradation/failure

high severity

Any mileage · $3,000-$8,000+

No new OEM packs; only refurbished/rebuilt cells (e.g. Greentec). Main long-term liability of this car.

Battery coolant pumps / heater & HV cooling components

medium severity

Any mileage · $300-$900

Multiple electric coolant pumps; failure can throw propulsion-power-reduced warnings.

Onboard charger / charge-port faults

medium severity

Any mileage · $500-$1,800

Charging interruptions; parts scarce for low-volume model (~2,700 built).

CUE infotainment touchscreen delamination / unresponsiveness

low severity

Any mileage · $400-$900

Common GM CUE issue of the era.

12V accessory battery

low severity

Any mileage · $150-$300

Powers control systems; failure prevents ready/charge.

Cost to keep

What it costs to own, by how long you keep it

Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new ELR at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.

You keep itOdometerServicingPer month
1 year12,000 mi$0$0
3 years36,000 mi$140$4
5 years60,000 mi$280$5
7 years84,000 mi$420$5
10 years120,000 mi$700$6
15 years180,000 mi$1,545$9

Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.

Beyond the schedule, the first big-ticket item this ELR is known for is HV traction battery (16-17 kWh Voltec, Gen-1 Volt cells) degradation/failure ($3,000-$8,000+). It is a range, not a certainty - but it is the number to have in your head at the dealership.

Operator notes

Extended-range EV (Voltec). DOES get oil changes but the 1.4L engine runs rarely, so oil is time-based (2 yr) and GM's engine/fuel-maintenance modes periodically burn old fuel. Regenerative braking makes pads/rotors last far longer than a conventional car. Built for MY2014 and MY2016 (no 2015); production ended Feb 2016.

When the smart money sells

Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a phev ELR retires around 150,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
