Service schedule

What the 2020 Ascent needs, and when

5 of these 11 items come from Subaru's own published schedule. Manufacturer rows link to Subaru's own schedule, Independent rows to a service shop or parts retailer's published guide.

ServiceIntervalSource
Engine oil and filter

Requires 0W-20 full synthetic; severe service dictates intervals closer to 3,000 miles to protect the turbocharged architecture.

6,000 mi / 6 monthsManufacturer
Engine air filter

A clean air filter is essential for consistent airflow to the turbocharger; clogged filters increase intake temperatures.

30,000 mi / 30 monthsIndependent
Cabin air filter

Critical for maintaining HVAC performance, especially when hauling large families in enclosed environments.

12,000 mi / 1 yearIndependent
Tire rotation

Must be performed strictly to preserve the Symmetrical AWD system and prevent drivetrain binding.

6,000 mi / 6 monthsIndependent
Brake fluid

Removes hygroscopic moisture to maintain the boiling point, vital for stopping a fully loaded 5,700-pound vehicle.

30,000 mi / 30 monthsManufacturer
Engine coolant

Initial replacement at 137,500 miles or 11 years, utilizing Subaru Super Coolant.

137,500 mi / 11 yearsManufacturer
Transmission fluidInspect, replace as neededManufacturer
Spark plugs

Crucial for efficient ignition; degradation beyond this point severely strains the ignition coils.

60,000 mi / 5 yearsManufacturer
Serpentine belt

Drive belt requires tension and wear inspection to prevent auxiliary component failure.

Inspect, replace as neededIndependent
Differential and transfer case fluid

Front and rear differential fluid degrades rapidly when towing, necessitating strict replacement intervals.

36,000 mi / 3 yearsIndependent
12V battery

Routine testing is required to catch parasitic drain issues early and prevent cold-start failures.

Inspect, replace as neededIndependent

Intervals are for normal driving; towing, short trips, extreme heat or dust shorten them. Services we could not find an interval for are left off rather than guessed.

July 2026

Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, 2025-2026 Forester Hybrid, Forester, and 2019-2026 Ascent vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured with an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) on the certification label. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 110, "Tire selection and rims."

Remedy: Subaru will mail a new certification label to owners, free of charge. Owners may also choose to have a dealer install the new label, free of charge. Letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed August 27, 2026. Additional letters will be mailed once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Remedy: Owners are advised to park their vehicle away from structures and to avoid leaving the vehicle unattended while the engine is running. An owner who notices or smells smoke coming from the dash or driver's footwell area should immediately stop operating the vehicle and turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position. Dealers will replace the PTC heater ground bolts and if necessary, replace the ground wire and the connector holder, free of charge. Remedy: Dealers will replace the left and right front tie rod ends and housings, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 7, 2022. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRL-21.
