Mercury Comet maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A compact sedan/coupe (Maverick-based) with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs Comet owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Service schedule

What it needs, and what that runs

IntervalServiceTypical cost
5,000 mi / 6 moEngine oil & filter change, check all fluids, inspect belts/hoses, tire pressure$55-$110
6,000 miChassis/suspension grease-fitting lube, inspect brakes, top off fluids, check exhaust$45-$90
12,000 miTune-up: spark plugs, distributor cap/rotor (Duraspark ignition on '77), air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve, carburetor idle/mixture adjust$170-$340
24,000 mi / 24 moCooling system flush & refill, replace radiator/heater hoses as needed, thermostat check$90-$170
30,000 miRepack/adjust front wheel bearings, inspect ball joints & steering linkage, brake service, auto trans fluid & filter (if equipped)$180-$380

Known repair windows

What Comet owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Nylon-toothed timing gear / timing chain wear

medium severity

60,000-100,000 mi · $500-$1,100

Ford 200/250 I6 and 302 V8 factory nylon cam gear strips teeth with age; causes rough running/no-start. Chain-and-gear upgrade common.

Carburetor flooding / hard-start (Motorcraft/Autolite 2100-2150)

medium severity

Any mileage · $250-$600

Ethanol-era gum, warped throttle body, worn accelerator pump; rebuild or replace.

Water pump & radiator

medium severity

60,000-90,000 mi · $300-$700

Original brass radiator and pump corrode/leak with age; overheating risk.

Body/frame rust (rockers, floor pans, front shock towers)

high severity

Any mileage · $1,000-$6,000+

Unibody Maverick/Comet is rust-prone; structural repair on shock towers can be extensive.

Mechanical fuel pump & rubber fuel lines

medium severity

Any mileage · $150-$450

Diaphragm fuel pump fails; 45+ yr old rubber lines crack and are a fire risk - replace on any survivor.

Front suspension ball joints / bushings

medium severity

50,000-100,000 mi · $350-$800

Worn upper/lower ball joints and control-arm bushings; wander and tire wear.

Operator notes

Timing CHAIN/gear (no belt). Base on 1977 Ford owner manual: 5,000 mi normal oil, 3,000 mi severe; period 10W-40/20W-50 mineral oil (modern owners use conventional or synthetic-blend). Duraspark electronic ignition by 1977 (earlier Comets ran breaker points). Classic caveats dominate: perished rubber, rust, carb/fuel varnish, ethanol compatibility, and unleaded-fuel valve-seat concern on high-mileage heads.

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a gas Comet retires around 95,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
