Mercedes-Benz G-Class maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A full-size luxury SUV (body-on-frame) with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs G-Class owners actually report, and the mileage windows worth buying ahead of - whether you are keeping it for yourself or putting it to work.

Known repair windows

What G-Class owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Differential lock actuators / vacuum & wiring

medium severity

40,000-100,000 mi · $500-$1,500

Three locking diffs; actuator/switch faults, especially with off-road use

48V ISG mild-hybrid (G550 3.0L I6) / electronics

high severity

30,000-90,000 mi · $3,000-$7,000

New I6+48V G550 shares MB 48V ISG risk; V8 G63 also gains 48V

Engine oil leaks (valve cover, oil cooler seals)

medium severity

50,000-120,000 mi · $800-$2,500

Common on turbo MB engines under heat/load

Solid-axle wheel bearings / driveline wear

Live-axle, heavy vehicle; bearings and driveshaft joints wear

Body/underbody corrosion & electronics (carryover risk)

Cost to keep

What it costs to own, by how long you keep it

Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new G-Class at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.

You keep itOdometerServicingPer month
1 year12,000 mi$475$40
3 years36,000 mi$1,950$54
5 years60,000 mi$4,825$80
7 years84,000 mi$6,650$79
10 years120,000 mi$9,650$80
15 years180,000 mi$14,475$80

Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.

Beyond the schedule, the first big-ticket item this G-Class is known for is 48V ISG mild-hybrid (G550 3.0L I6) / electronics from about 30,000 miles ($3,000-$7,000). It is a range, not a certainty - but it is the number to have in your head at the dealership.

Operator notes

W465 generation (2025); G550 downsized to 3.0L turbo inline-6 with 48V mild hybrid (gas, takes oil), AMG G63 keeps the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 (now also 48V). Body-on-frame, three locking differentials, low-range 4WD - driveline fluids (transfer case + 3 diffs) are extra scheduled items. FSS Service A/B; timing chain; premium ownership costs. An all-electric G580 (EQG) variant also exists on the same body. Off-road use warrants severe-service intervals.

When the smart money sells

Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas G-Class retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: 48V ISG mild-hybrid (G550 3.0L I6) / electronics risk window ($3,000-$7,000) opens ~30,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
