Mazda CX-5 maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps
A compact SUV with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs CX-5 owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Known repair windows
What CX-5 owners actually run into
Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.
Cracked cylinder head / coolant leak (2.5 & 2.5T pre-June-2020)
high severity40,000-110,000 mi · $2,500-$4,500
Documented Mazda TSB on early Skyactiv-G 2.5; can cause overheating/misfire
Oil consumption (2014-2018 2.5)
medium severity60,000-120,000 mi · $150-$300 top-offs / $2,500-$4,000 ring job
Worn rings/valve seals/PCV; check oil between changes
GDI intake-valve carbon buildup
medium severity60,000-100,000 mi · $400-$700
Both NA and turbo; walnut blasting
Water pump (chain-driven, internal)
medium severity80,000-130,000 mi · $500-$900
Coolant leak; higher labor than external pump
Turbo failure (2.5 Turbo)
medium severity90,000-150,000 mi · $1,800-$2,800
Rarer; oil quality/interval discipline critical
AC condenser damage
medium severity40,000-100,000 mi · $600-$1,000
Exposed condenser
Operator notes
All-new 3rd-generation CX-5 launched for 2026 (larger body, 15.6-in screen, Google built-in), initially with 2.5L Skyactiv-G NA + 6-speed auto; the 2.5L Turbo was dropped after the 2025 (2nd-gen) model. All Skyactiv-G use timing CHAINS. Known issues above reflect the well-documented 2.5 Skyactiv platform that carries over; new-gen has limited long-term data. Normal = 7,500 mi/12 mo synthetic; severe ~5,000 mi. FL-22 coolant ~10 yr/120k.
When the smart money sells
On fleet math, a gas CX-5 retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: Cracked cylinder head / coolant leak (2.5 & 2.5T pre-June-2020) risk window ($2,500-$4,500) opens ~40,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
