Cost to keep
What it costs to own, by how long you keep it
Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new MKZ at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.
| You keep it | Odometer | Servicing | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 12,000 mi | $130 | $11 |
| 3 years | 36,000 mi | $790 | $22 |
| 5 years | 60,000 mi | $2,280 | $38 |
| 7 years | 84,000 mi | $2,540 | $30 |
| 10 years | 120,000 mi | $5,460 | $46 |
| 15 years | 180,000 mi | $7,740 | $43 |
Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.
Beyond the schedule, the first big-ticket item this MKZ is known for is Hybrid high-voltage battery degradation (Hybrid variant) from about 100,000 miles ($1,500-$4,000). It is a range, not a certainty - but it is the number to have in your head at the dealership.
Operator notes
Timing CHAIN. Discontinued after 2020. Offered as GAS (2.0L turbo, 3.0L twin-turbo GT 350/400 hp, 6-speed 6F35) AND as an eCVT HYBRID (2.0L Atkinson) - latest-year powertrain listed as gas (base). Hybrid variant gets oil changes too but adds HV-battery aging and long-life regen brakes. Full-synthetic oil 10k / 7.5k severe.
When the smart money sells
Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas MKZ retires around 95,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
