Ferrari 308 GTS maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps
A targa-top sports coupe (2-seat) with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs 308 GTS owners actually report, and the mileage windows worth buying ahead of - whether you are keeping it for yourself or putting it to work.
Service schedule
What it needs, and what that runs
| Interval | Service | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000 mi | Engine oil + filter; chassis lube; check/adjust drive belts; inspect fuel lines and hoses; brake inspection | $300-$600 |
| 15,000 mi / 60 mo | Valve clearance check/adjust (shim); spark plugs; fuel filter; air filter; coolant; brake fluid flush; ignition service | $1,200-$2,500 |
| 30,000 mi / 60 mo | Timing belts (x2) + tensioners + water pump; A/C compressor removal for access; full major service; cam seals | $1,800-$3,500 (in-car, no engine-out) |
Known repair windows
What 308 GTS owners actually run into
Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.
Valve guide wear / burnt valves
high severity40,000-80,000 mi · $3,000-$7,000 (head R&R)
Worn guides cause oil consumption and smoke; classic 308 top-end issue.
Timing belt failure (if service neglected)
high severityAny mileage · $8,000-$20,000 (interference engine rebuild)
Snapped belt bends valves; the single most important preventive item.
Rust (sills, floors, battery tray)
medium severityAny mileage · $2,000-$15,000
Steel-bodied 308s corrode; inspect thoroughly on any purchase.
Electrical / K-Jetronic fuel injection faults
medium severityAny mileage · $500-$3,000
Aging wiring, warm-up regulator, fuel distributor; parts increasingly scarce.
Cost to keep
What it costs to own, by how long you keep it
Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new 308 GTS at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.
| You keep it | Odometer | Servicing | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 12,000 mi | $1,800 | $150 |
| 3 years | 36,000 mi | $11,750 | $326 |
| 5 years | 60,000 mi | $21,700 | $362 |
| 7 years | 84,000 mi | $27,150 | $323 |
| 10 years | 120,000 mi | $43,400 | $362 |
| 15 years | 180,000 mi | $65,100 | $362 |
Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.
Beyond the schedule, the first big-ticket item this 308 GTS is known for is Valve guide wear / burnt valves from about 40,000 miles ($3,000-$7,000 (head R&R)). It is a range, not a certainty - but it is the number to have in your head at the dealership.
Operator notes
Classic. Final 308 GTS was the Quattrovalvole (QV) 2.9L 4-cam V8, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection (earlier 1977-80 carbureted, 1980-82 GTSi). TIMING BELT (2 belts) service due every 3-5 yr / ~25,000-30,000 mi; on the 308 the transverse V8 lets belts be changed IN-CAR (no engine-out), so far cheaper than later 348/355. Base schedule on era owner's manual: 3,000-5,000 mi oil. Age-related items dominate: rubber fuel/vacuum lines, coolant hoses, brake hoses, rust in sills/floors. Values now collector-grade.
When the smart money sells
Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas 308 GTS retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: Valve guide wear / burnt valves risk window ($3,000-$7,000 (head R&R)) opens ~40,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
