Known repair windows

What Ram 1500 owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Hurricane I6 cooling / thermostat / high-EGT & cat damage

medium severity

2025 twin-turbo teething: thermostat failures, check-engine, high exhaust-gas-temp damaging cats; Stellantis addressing via SBs/software

Cost to keep

What it costs to own, by how long you keep it

Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new Ram 1500 at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.

You keep itOdometerServicingPer month
1 year12,000 mi$130$11
3 years36,000 mi$1,040$29
5 years60,000 mi$3,080$51
7 years84,000 mi$3,590$43
10 years120,000 mi$6,160$51
15 years180,000 mi$9,240$51

Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.

Beyond the schedule, the first big-ticket item this Ram 1500 is known for is 5.7L HEMI lifter/cam (pre-2025 or 2026 HEMI trucks) from about 70,000 miles ($2,500-$5,000). It is a range, not a certainty - but it is the number to have in your head at the dealership.

Operator notes

Current DT-generation full-size pickup, latest 2025. IMPORTANT: 'Ram' split from Dodge as its own brand in 2011 - the last Dodge-BADGED Ram 1500 was 2010; modern trucks are Ram brand (Turo hosts often still label them 'Dodge'). 2025 dropped the 5.7 HEMI for the 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo I6 (SO 420 hp / HO 540 hp), with 3.6 Pentastar eTorque V6 base; HEMI returns as an option for 2026, 3.0 EcoDiesel discontinued after 2023. Timing CHAIN. Hurricane oil interval is contentious - RHO/tow use should stay at 6,000 mi.

When the smart money sells

Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas Ram 1500 retires around 95,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: 5.7L HEMI lifter/cam (pre-2025 or 2026 HEMI trucks) risk window ($2,500-$5,000) opens ~70,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
