2018 BMW M6 maintenance schedule

The 2018 M6 is part of the F12/F13 generation (2012-2018). Below: its service intervals with the source behind each one, the fluids it takes, the problems owners report for this year, and the NHTSA recalls issued for it.

Service schedule

What the 2018 M6 needs, and when

Manufacturer rows link to BMW's own schedule, Independent rows to a service shop or parts retailer's published guide.

ServiceIntervalSource
Engine oil and filter

Requires a mandatory 1,200-mile break-in fluid exchange. Due to the hot-V turbocharger placement, independent shops strongly advise 5,000-mile intervals.

10,000 mi / 1 yearIndependent
Engine air filter

Critical for turbocharger spool efficiency; dual-intake tracts must remain pristine to prevent compressor wheel damage from particulate ingestion.

30,000 mi / 3 yearsIndependent
Cabin air filter

Microfilter replacement ensures the sophisticated HVAC system operates efficiently without stressing the interior blower motor.

20,000 mi / 2 yearsIndependent
Tire rotation

Staggered setups require side-to-side rotation (if tires are non-directional) to mitigate aggressive inner shoulder wear caused by factory negative camber.

5,000 mi / 6 monthsIndependent
Brake fluid

Flush every 2 years; track driving boils moisture-contaminated fluid, creating a spongy pedal under heavy braking and risking hydraulic fade.

30,000 mi / 2 yearsIndependent
Engine coolant

Maintaining correct inhibitor levels prevents galvanic corrosion inside the aluminum engine block and complex thermal management routing.

30,000 miIndependent
Transmission fluid

The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission requires a highly specific fluid flush and a clutch adaptation reset via ISTA to prevent severe clutch shudder.

40,000 miIndependent
Spark plugs

Turbocharged combustion induces rapid electrode wear; the S63 is incredibly sensitive to gap widening, leading to aggressive misfire faults.

60,000 mi / 6 yearsIndependent
Timing chain

Uses a timing chain. Diagnostics are required to ensure the plastic chain guides have not become brittle from the extreme V8 thermal cycling.

Inspect, replace as neededIndependent
Serpentine belt

Visual inspection prevents belt snapping; a broken belt often wraps around the harmonic balancer, destroying the front main engine seal.

60,000 mi / 6 yearsIndependent
Differential and transfer case fluid

The rear differential must receive its initial fluid flush at the 1,200-mile break-in service to remove manufacturing debris, then every 50,000 miles.

50,000 miIndependent
12V battery

AGM battery must be registered via OBD2 scan tool upon replacement; failure to register causes the alternator to overcharge and boil the new battery.

4 yearsIndependent

Intervals are for normal driving; towing, short trips, extreme heat or dust shorten them. Services we could not find an interval for are left off rather than guessed.

Known problems

What 2018 M6 owners run into

Problems reported for this model year, with the mileage they tend to show up at. Buying past a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Brake vacuum pump failure

high severity

$960-$1,066 to fix

Sudden loss of power braking assist resulting in an extremely stiff brake pedal and substantially increased stopping distances.
