BMW i3 maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps

A subcompact hatchback EV with a battery-electric powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs i3 owners actually report, and when a fleet operator would sell. Same data Carlyle uses to score fleet buys.

Service schedule

What it needs, and what that runs

IntervalServiceTypical cost
10,000 miTire rotation; multi-point + brake inspection; software check; top off washer/coolant; NO oil change (BEV)$50-$150
20,000 mi / 24 moCabin micro/charcoal filter; brake fluid flush; wiper blades; tire rotation$200-$400
60,000 mi / 60 moHV battery + power-electronics coolant service if specified; cabin filter; brake fluid; A/C service$200-$500
6,000 mi / 12 moRange-extender oil + filter (647cc 2-cyl); spark plugs; fuel-system/air filter; run-quality check$150-$350

Known repair windows

What i3 owners actually run into

Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

HV battery degradation

high severity

60,000-120,000 mi · $8,000-$18,000 (full pack, rare)

Some report ~20-30% range loss by ~3-6 yr; module-level repair possible; worse with heat/DC fast charging

KLE onboard charger / charging electronics failure

high severity

Any mileage · $2,000-$4,000

Common i3 fault - car won't charge; CCS DC inlet issues too

Range-extender engine faults (motor mounts, stale-fuel, carbon)

medium severity

Any mileage · $500-$2,000

REx models only; infrequent running fouls plugs, degrades fuel; source of ~half of REx problems

12V (AGM) battery

low severity

Any mileage · $250-$450

Failure causes many false warnings / no-start

Central display / iDrive freeze (pre-2017)

low severity

Any mileage · $0-$1,500

Often software-fixable; CID unit failure otherwise

Skinny tires (unusual size) wear/cost

low severity

15,000-30,000 mi · $200-$400 each

Narrow tall low-rolling-resistance tires, limited brands

Operator notes

BEV (final 2021 US: 120Ah / 42.2 kWh pack). Optional REx = 647cc 2-cyl gas range extender (that variant is technically a series plug-in hybrid). NO engine oil on pure-BEV; regen braking makes pads/rotors last very long (but rotors can rust from disuse). US sales ended after MY2021 (global 2022). Carbon-fiber (CFRP) passenger cell = expensive body repair.

When the smart money sells

On fleet math, a battery-electric i3 retires around 150,000 miles - but the exit window opens earlier here: HV battery degradation risk window ($8,000-$18,000 (full pack, rare)) opens ~60,000 mi. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.

Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
