2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe maintenance schedule

The 2020 8 Series Gran Coupe is part of the G16 generation (2020-2026). Below: its service intervals with the source behind each one, the fluids it takes, the problems owners report for this year, and the NHTSA recalls issued for it.

Service schedule

What the 2020 8 Series Gran Coupe needs, and when

2 of these 12 items come from BMW's own published schedule. Manufacturer rows link to BMW's own schedule, Independent rows to a service shop or parts retailer's published guide.

ServiceIntervalSource
Engine oil and filter

For the N63 V8, independent technicians heavily advise accelerating this to 5,000 miles to prevent turbocharger oil feed line coking.

10,000 mi / 1 yearIndependent
Engine air filter

The low front intake tracts are highly susceptible to ingesting road debris; frequent inspection preserves the turbocharger compressor wheels.

30,000 mi / 3 yearsIndependent
Cabin air filter

Preserves the efficiency of the advanced multi-zone climate control systems and prevents microbial odors.

20,000 mi / 2 yearsIndependent
Tire rotation

Staggered setups require side-to-side rotation (if tires are non-directional) to mitigate aggressive inner shoulder wear caused by factory negative camber.

5,000 mi / 6 monthsIndependent
Brake fluid

A strict 24-month replacement is required to maintain the integrity of the integrated brake-by-wire system and prevent moisture-induced hydraulic failure.

30,000 mi / 2 yearsIndependent
Engine coolant

Maintaining correct inhibitor levels prevents galvanic corrosion inside the aluminum engine block and complex thermal management routing.

No scheduled replacementManufacturer
Transmission fluid

ZF strongly recommends fluid and filter changes; ignoring this leads to mechatronic failure and torque converter shudder under the immense N63 torque load.

No scheduled replacementManufacturer
Spark plugs

The N63 V8 is highly intolerant of widened spark plug gaps; degrading plugs induce misfires that rapidly destroy the expensive catalytic converters.

60,000 mi / 6 yearsIndependent
Timing chain

Uses a timing chain. N63 variants require acoustic diagnostics to detect chain stretch; B58 variants mount the chain at the rear, making inspection critical.

Inspect, replace as neededIndependent
Serpentine belt

A failing hydraulic tensioner allows the belt to slip, causing sudden loss of steering assist and alternator charging capability.

60,000 mi / 6 yearsIndependent
Differential and transfer case fluid

The sheer mass and power of the G16 rapidly degrade transfer case fluid; fresh oil restores smooth operation to the xDrive clutch packs.

50,000 miIndependent
12V battery

The vehicle relies on a highly complex power management architecture; a degraded AGM battery initiates a cascade of spurious module communication faults.

4 yearsIndependent

Intervals are for normal driving; towing, short trips, extreme heat or dust shorten them. Services we could not find an interval for are left off rather than guessed.

Known problems

What 2020 8 Series Gran Coupe owners run into

Problems reported for this model year, with the mileage they tend to show up at. Buying past a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Coolant expansion tank cracking

high severity

60,000-80,000 mi · $150-$600 to fix

Hairline fractures in the plastic tank due to thermal cycling induce slow coolant leaks, manifesting as low coolant warnings and dried white residue on engine components.
