2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe maintenance schedule

The 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe is part of the G26 generation (2022-2026). Below: its service intervals with the source behind each one, the fluids it takes, the problems owners report for this year, and the NHTSA recalls issued for it.

Service schedule

What the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe needs, and when

2 of these 12 items come from BMW's own published schedule. Manufacturer rows link to BMW's own schedule, Independent rows to a service shop or parts retailer's published guide.

ServiceIntervalSource
Engine oil and filter (ICE)

Regular thermal cycling degrades synthetic viscosity; CBS monitors operational load to adjust this interval, but aggressive driving warrants 5,000-mile changes.

10,000 mi / 1 yearIndependent
Engine air filter (ICE)

High-flow turbochargers require unrestricted intake volume; failing to replace this filter induces rich fuel trims and sluggish throttle response.

30,000 mi / 3 yearsIndependent
Cabin air filter

Filters particulates and odors; critical for preserving the efficiency of the advanced multi-zone climate control systems.

20,000 mi / 2 yearsIndependent
Tire rotation

Instantaneous torque deployment on EV and B58 variants accelerates rear tire wear exponentially; consistent rotation prevents asymmetrical handling.

5,000 mi / 6 monthsIndependent
Brake fluid

Replacement every two years prevents spongy pedal feel and ensures optimal performance of the autonomous emergency braking actuators.

30,000 mi / 2 yearsIndependent
Engine coolant (ICE)

Maintaining correct inhibitor levels prevents galvanic corrosion inside the aluminum engine block and complex thermal management routing.

No scheduled replacementManufacturer
Transmission fluid (ICE)

Fluid oxidation reduces friction modifier effectiveness, leading to harsh engagements and clutch slip; replacing the pan/filter unit is mandatory.

No scheduled replacementManufacturer
Spark plugs (ICE)

Advanced combustion mapping requires precise spark energy; degraded plugs cause imperceptible micro-misfires that gradually destroy the catalytic converter.

60,000 mi / 6 yearsIndependent
Timing chain (ICE)

Employs a timing chain.

Inspect, replace as neededIndependent
Serpentine belt (ICE)

Drives the alternator and A/C compressor; visual inspection for rib cracking prevents unexpected accessory drive failure.

60,000 mi / 6 yearsIndependent
Differential and transfer case fluid (ICE)

Differential fluid degrades under intense torque loads from the B58; fresh fluid maintains the limited-slip characteristics and prevents gear whining.

50,000 miIndependent
12V battery

The highly electrified 48V mild-hybrid and advanced telematic systems rapidly cycle the 12V AGM battery; replacement prevents cascading electrical faults.

4 yearsIndependent

Intervals are for normal driving; towing, short trips, extreme heat or dust shorten them. Services we could not find an interval for are left off rather than guessed.

Known problems

What 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe owners run into

Problems reported for this model year, with the mileage they tend to show up at. Buying past a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.

Oil pump fracture

high severity

$6,000-$8,000 to fix

Rapid loss of oil pressure, particularly during cold starts in low ambient temperatures, leading to instantaneous bearing starvation and engine seizure.

Coolant expansion tank cracking

high severity

60,000-80,000 mi · $150-$600 to fix

Hairline fractures in the plastic tank due to thermal cycling induce slow coolant leaks, manifesting as low coolant warnings and dried white residue on engine components.
