BMW 2 Series maintenance: the schedule, the costs, the traps
A compact sports coupe (RWD) with a gas powertrain. Below: the service intervals with real cost ranges, the repairs 2 Series owners actually report, and the mileage windows worth buying ahead of - whether you are keeping it for yourself or putting it to work.
Service schedule
What it needs, and what that runs

| 30,000 mi / 24 mo | Cabin micro-filter; engine air filter; brake fluid flush | $400-$600 |
| 60,000 mi | Spark plugs; air filters; inspection | $400-$700 |
| 100,000 mi | Coolant; ZF 8HP automatic fluid & pan; drive belt | $600-$1,100 |
Known repair windows
What 2 Series owners actually run into
Mileage ranges where these repairs typically show up. Buying above a window is not automatically a pass - it just needs to be priced in.
Oil filter housing gasket leak (B48/B58)
medium severity50,000-100,000 mi · $400-$800
Most common modern-BMW oil leak; can drip onto belt
Electric water pump / thermostat failure
medium severity90,000-130,000 mi · $700-$1,000
Electronically controlled pump is a wear item
B58 coolant valley/transfer pipe seepage (M240i)
low severity80,000-140,000 mi · $600-$1,200
Long-term; B58 otherwise very robust
Front brakes + staggered tire wear
low severity30,000-50,000 mi · $400-$700/axle
M240i wears fronts fast; staggered setups can't be rotated
Cost to keep
What it costs to own, by how long you keep it
Scheduled servicing only, from a brand-new 2 Series at 12,000 miles a year. Insurance, fuel, tires and depreciation are yours to add - this is the part the shop charges you for.
| You keep it | Odometer | Servicing | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 12,000 mi | $180 | $15 |
| 3 years | 36,000 mi | $1,040 | $29 |
| 5 years | 60,000 mi | $2,630 | $44 |
| 7 years | 84,000 mi | $2,990 | $36 |
| 10 years | 120,000 mi | $6,110 | $51 |
| 15 years | 180,000 mi | $8,740 | $49 |
Per-month can dip as the horizon lengthens - a major service lands in one year and then averages out across all the months after it. The left column is what you actually spend.
Operator notes
G42 gen: 230i = B48 2.0T, M240i = B58 3.0T. Timing chain. Among BMW's most reliable current engines. ZF 8-speed marketed 'lifetime' but fluid service recommended ~80k-100k. Synthetic oil, 1 yr/10k CBS.
When the smart money sells
Keeping it yourself, there is no cutoff - the table above runs to fifteen years. On fleet math, where a car has to keep earning, a gas 2 Series retires around 95,000 miles. Carlyle's garage tracks this per car, against your actual odometer.
Cost ranges are typical US independent-shop estimates and vary by region and condition. Modeling, not mechanic advice - always confirm against your car's service records.
